Teach Me to Praise: Learning God’s Way

Pastor Ryan Perry Sermon 17 August 2025
Calling believers to move beyond casual or emotional expressions of worship into Biblical praise that follows God’s own instructions. Praise is not accidental—it is learned from the Word and practiced until it becomes a lifestyle.
1. The Call to Learn Praise - Just as the disciples asked Jesus, “Teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1), the Spirit calls us to say, “Teach us to praise.” Biblical praise:
2. Praise Starts with Who God Is - Psalm 100:4 shows the difference between thanksgiving (for what God has done) and praise (for who He is). Speaking truth about God’s character activates praise.
3. God’s Vocabulary for Praise - Scripture gives specific Hebrew praise words as divine instructions:
4. Praise Before the Breakthrough - Jesus thanked the Father before Lazarus was raised (John 11:41) and sang before the cross (Matt. 26:30). Praise anticipates God’s move, rather than reacting to it.
5. Praise in the Dark - Paul and Silas praised in prison (Acts 16:22–31), and God opened doors. Praise in the midnight hour confuses the enemy and breaks unseen chains.
6. Praise as a Lifestyle - Romans 12:1 reminds us that true worship is offering our whole selves to God. Praise is more than music—it is living, speaking, and responding in ways that glorify Him.
7. Declaration of Commitment - “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Ps. 34:1). Praise school never ends; we keep learning, obeying, and praising in every circumstance.
8. Altar Call — Restoring the Song - Psalm 40:3 says God gives a new song. Barriers to praise may be sin, pain, or disappointment. The first act of praise is surrender to Jesus. Believers are invited to come forward to surrender, be restored, and reclaim their song—beginning their breakthrough with open-mouth praise.
