Sukkot: Jerusalem – God’s Glory Fills the Temple

Pastor Ryan Perry Sermon 14 September 2025

This sermon traces God’s dwelling presence from Eden to Solomon’s Temple, and ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

  • Solomon’s Temple: Built with splendor, it was filled with God’s glory at Sukkot (2 Chron. 7:1–3). Yet Solomon himself acknowledged that no house of stone could contain the infinite God (1 Kgs. 8:27).

  • Fragility of Temples: Though glorious, the Temple was not final. Like the fragile booths of Sukkot, it pointed forward to something greater. Idolatry led to God’s glory departing (Ezek. 10–11), and the people were driven east into exile—like Adam and Eve from Eden.

  • Hope in Exile: Even in judgment, God promised restoration. The second Temple was less glorious, but Haggai promised a future glory greater than the first (Hag. 2:9). Ezekiel and Zechariah foresaw God’s glory returning to Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives.

  • Christ the True Temple: Jesus fulfilled what the Temple foreshadowed. He is the Rock of Daniel, the rejected cornerstone (Isa. 28:16; Ps. 118:22), the Word made flesh who tabernacled among us (John 1:14). In Him, God’s glory dwells fully (Eph. 2:20–22).

  • Final Fulfillment: In the New Jerusalem, no temple is needed—the Lord and the Lamb are its temple (Rev. 21:22). Eden is restored with the river of life and the tree of life. God dwells with His people forever.

Application:
  • Don’t build your hope on fragile houses, kingdoms, or achievements—they crumble.
  • Build your life on the Rock, Christ Jesus, the unshakable foundation and eternal Temple.
  • As believers, we are now God’s dwelling place by His Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16).

Choose today. Will you trust in fragile kingdoms, or will you build your life on the Rock that endures forever?
